Celebrating Student Innovation: Ayaan Jain and the Story of FareX Rides
At the Social Impact Lab, we exist to support students to turn ideas into action – helping them explore real-world challenges, build practical solutions, and develop the skills and confidence to create meaningful change. We are particularly passionate about celebrating students who take that step beyond the classroom, applying entrepreneurial thinking to address pressing societal and environmental issues.
One of our University of Southapton Delhi students, Ayaan Jain, is a standout example of exactly the kind of student innovator we aim to support.
As the founder of FareX Rides, Ayaan has been developing a technology-first intercity shared mobility platform designed to tackle one of India’s most common yet overlooked challenges: affordable, reliable intercity travel. For many students and professionals, the choice is limited to expensive private taxis or overcrowded, inconsistent public transport. FareX Rides reimagines this experience by organising shared cab journeys, allowing passengers to split costs while improving efficiency, reducing congestion, and lowering carbon emissions.
What makes this project particularly impressive is not just the strength of the idea, but the journey behind it. Alongside his studies, Ayaan has built FareX through continuous iteration – refining the concept, responding to feedback, and adapting the model over time. From exploring hybrid and sustainable fuels to longer-term ambitions around electrified travel corridors, the project demonstrates both vision and a strong commitment to sustainability.

This work has already been recognised through a number of significant milestones. Ayaan was named as a winner of our 100 Big Ideas competition, selected for the Ford Mobility Accelerator delivered by Enactus UK & Ireland, and invited to present at a high-level strategic roundtable on clean air in Delhi, attended by local leading policymakers and organisations.
Beyond these achievements, FareX Rides represents something deeper. It reflects the kind of learning that happens when students apply theory to practice – developing skills in leadership, communication, problem-solving and resilience that cannot be taught in isolation. It also shows how entrepreneurship can be a powerful tool for addressing real challenges, with the potential to create both economic and environmental value.
At the Social Impact Lab, these are the kinds of projects we are proud to champion. FareX Rides is not just a strong business idea; it is an example of how student-led innovation can contribute to more sustainable, inclusive systems.
Ayaan’s journey highlights what is possible when students are supported to think differently, act boldly, and stay committed to solving problems that matter. It is exactly this mindset that we aim to foster – and celebrate – across our community.
