Walking in their shoes: MH Medical Outreach

A Southampton Medical Student global engagement project, supported by Social Impact Lab

The Social Impact Fund can support you with your projects to drive social change. Medical Student Julia Taylor tells us more…

The Pulse for Change and Social Enterprise funding has allowed for global research to be an accessible field for students who strive to contribute to health equity worldwide, regardless of their background.

MH Medical Outreach Programme is a Southampton medical student global engagement project, established in 2023.

It follows an ethos that “you will ever truly understand the challenges a community faces until you try to walk within their shoes.” Therefore the programme allows two medical students to work and live in a rural community in northern Ghana. It is the first initiative of its kind at a UK Medical School.

MH Fellows work towards sustainable, equitable change by conducting research during their placement that helps Ghana to work towards achieving their UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Their insight aims to amplify the voice of Mile End communities, who are often underrepresented, in regional and national policy making.
