Turning Ideas into Action: Small Business Speed Launch

A weekend filled with ambition, collaboration, and real progress.

Building on the success of previous bootcamps, Small Business Speed Launch returned for another action-packed weekend from Friday 24 to Sunday 26 April 2026. Hosted at the Student Enterprise Junction in the City Centre campus, the event brought together driven, like‑minded entrepreneurs for an immersive bootcamp focused on learning, collaboration, and tangible progress.

Delivered by the Student Enterprise Team in partnership with the Women in Business Society, the weekend gave participants the chance to learn from experienced founders, receive tailored and practical advice, and pitch their ideas for the opportunity to win cash prizes.

Small Business Speed Launch equips students with the essential knowledge to turn their business ideas into reality through expert‑led sessions covering:

  • Communicating your business idea
  • Validation best practises
  • Branding on a budget
  • Customer acquisition
  • Website building 101
  • Monetisation & basic financial modelling
  • Social media best practises
  • Pitching fundamentals
  • Productivity hacks & avoiding founder burnout

Day 1: Founder Panel & Networking Session

Friday evening opened with an insightful panel featuring University of Southampton founders and Foundership alumni Cherish Boxall, Valdi Popova, and James Harcourt. The speakers shared honest reflections on the highs and lows of entrepreneurship, alongside practical advice on getting started. The evening continued with a session on effectively introducing your business, before concluding with networking and pizza in the Student Enterprise Junction.

Day 2: Validating Ideas & Building Momentum

Saturday was a full day of learning, collaboration, and hands‑on progress. In the morning, students took part in an idea validation session, encouraging them to challenge assumptions and refine their thinking early on. The day then moved into a series of parallel sessions, with multiple expert‑led workshops running alongside practical clinics and one‑to‑one support, allowing attendees to tailor their experience to their individual business needs.

Between sessions, students had dedicated time to network, collaborate, and actively develop their ventures. Following an afternoon of group coaching and a second round of parallel sessions, the day concluded with networking and bowling social hosted by Women in Business, offering the perfect opportunity to unwind, celebrate progress, and continue building meaningful connections.

Day 3: The Final Pitches

Sunday brought the weekend to an exciting close, with a focus on pitching and productivity. The team delivered sessions on pitching with confidence, productivity hacks, and avoiding founder burnout before students put their learning into action. The final pitching competition saw attendees split into three groups, each delivering a 60‑second pitch showcasing their idea. Students then voted across categories, including Most Interesting Idea and Best Communicator. The most‑nominated students pitched once more in a grand final, with the winners each taking home a £100 prize.

Empowering the Next Wave of Founders

“It was absolutely brilliant. I learnt so much, and what a great Student Enterprise team we have at this university!”

Small Business Speed Launch 2026 stands as a testament to the University’s dedication to empowering future founders. By combining practical experience with expert guidance, the event reinforced Southampton’s reputation as a thriving hub for entrepreneurship.
